The district of Ernakulam was formed on 1st April 1958 from the erstwhile kingdoms of Travancore, Kochi and Malabar. The largest portion of Ernakulam is from the Kochi kingdom. In the ancient times, it was the capital of kingdom of Gurshi and was know as 'Krishinagakulam'. Later it became popular as Ernakulam. The town is spread over an area of two and a half square miles.
Tourist Attractions

Santa Cruz Basilica is the historic church built by the Portuguese. Pope Paul IV elevated it to a Cathedral in 1558 AD. The British demolished the church in 1795 AD when they took over Kochi. Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira ordered the construction of a new building at the same site in 1887 AD.
