Wayanad lies between the altitude of 700 and 210 m above the sea level among the mountains of the Western Ghats in the northeastern part of Kerala. The name of the hill town Wayanad is derived from the word vayalnadu meaning the land of paddy fields. Wayanad came into existence on 1st November 1980 as the 12th district of Kerala. It was made out from the parts of the districts of Kozhikode and Kannur. The district earns foreign exchange for producing spices like pepper, cardamom, spices, tea, coffee and seasonings.
Pookat Lake is a natural fresh water lake and lies in the midst of evergreen forest and hills. A fresh water aquarium with large variety of fish and children's park draws a lot of tourists.
Kuruvadweep is an island spanning 950 acre of area on the eastward bound Kabani River. It is a popular picnic spot. This island is home to rare species of birds, orchids and herbs.
Kambamala, Karimala and Varadiga surround Thirunelly Temple. 30 granite columns shelter the shrine of the Thirunelly Temple and the ground is also paved with huge square pieces of granite.
The two rock caves of Edakkal Caves draw large number of crowd. The hills are famous for the ancient carvings and pictorial writings dating back to New Stone Age. They are situated in the Ambukuthy Hills.
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is known for a wide range of flora and fauna. You may spot elephant, spotted deer, bison, tiger, cheetah and wild bear.
Travel to Wayanad is not complete without a visit to the Varambettas Mosque and the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum.
How to Reach
The nearest airport and railway station to Wayanad is at Kozhikode, which is 100 km away. It is easily accessible by road buses and private taxis from most of the cities of Kerala. Private taxis and auto rickshaws are available for local travel.
