Idukki is a landlocked district spread over an area of 5019 sq km located at an altitude of 2500 ft above the sea level in the southern part of Kerala. The word 'Idukki' is derived from the word 'idukku', which in Malayalam means a narrow gorge. Kuthumkal Waterfalls is a perfect place for picnics and leisurely outings. The cascading cool water falling from a height attracts a lot of tourists.
Observatory Hill is situated at Nedumkandam. You can watch the celestial bodies from this place, as the sky is clear and free from pollution.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural habitat fro the endangered specie of Giant Grizzled Squirrel. There is a thick forest of thorny scrubs.
Idukki Arch Dam is renowned for being the world's second and Asia's first arch dam. It is built across the Periyar River between the two granite hills of the Kuravan and Kurathi. The dam measures 550 ft in height and 650 ft width. Cheruthoni Barrage and Kulamavu Dam are also close by.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread from the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluka of Idukki district. It extends over an area of 77 sq km. You may find animals like the elephant, bison, sambar, deer and birds like the jungle foul, laughing thrush etc.
Travel to Idukki is not complete without the excursions to hill stations like Munnar, Thekkady and Peermade. These hill stations are popular for salubrious climate, tea and spice plantations, colonial town planning and lakes and streams.

The nearest airport is at Kochi 132 km away while the nearest railway station is at Kottayam 132 km away. Idukki is accessible by buses and private taxis from most of the cities of Kerala. Private taxis and auto rickshaws are available for local travel.
