Kappad Beach is 16 km from Kozhikode. The legendry beach is famous as the first landing place of Vasco da Gama in India. Even after 500 years of being mentioned in the annals of history, Kappad Beach lives in oblivion.
Vasco Da Gama landed at Kappad with 170 men in three vessels on 27th May 1498. To commemorate the event, a solitary pillar inscribed with "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498" can be seen at the spot.
Kappad Beach is scattered with country fishing boats, which does not look ugly but gives a rustic beauty to the beach. Locally known as Kappakadavu, the beach has series of rocks some of which protrudes into the sea.
There is temple at the beach, which is believed to be 800 year old. The Korapuzha River flows by the Kappad Beach. The calm, serene and little crowded beach attracts lovers of peace and solitude.
Kappad Beach is connected with all the major cities of India by air, rail and land routes via Kozhikode. The nearest airport is at Karipur 23 km from Kozhikode and the railway station is at Kozhikode itself.
