Alappuzha Beach is one of the most visited beaches of Kerala. The major attraction of the Alappuzha Beach is the 137-year-old pier, which extends deep into the sea. The water sports facilities, Children Park and boating are well developed in the Vijaya Beach Park. An old lighthouse also fascinates the tourists very much.
Kuttanad, the Rice Bowl of Kerala, are in the heart of the Alappuzha Backwaters. The special feature of the kuttanad is that it is the only place in the world where farming is done below the sea level. They have a rich growth of paddy, banana, cassava and yam.
Pathiramanal is close by the Alappuzha Beach. According to the local legend, a young Brahmin plunged into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening rituals. The water gave way to land thereby creating the island of Pathiramanal. It is a haven for bird watchers, as hundreds of rare migratory birds flock to this island from different parts of the world. The island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom and is accessible only by boat.
Chavara Bhavan is the ancestral home of the Kuriakose Elias Chavara. It is now revered as a holy shrine and spiritual resort. Thousands of devotees assemble here for prayer and to receive favors. A 250-year-old historically important lighthouse is preserved here in its original and primitive form.
Champakulam Church or the St. Mary's Church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It is believed to be one of the seven churches established by St. Thomas. The annual feast of this church is hosted on the 3rd Sunday of October every year.
Alappuzha is also famous for its snake boat races, marine products, coir industry and backwaters.
