Alappuzha Backwaters is fast becoming a popular attraction among the tourists. Alappuzha or Alleppey is one of the best ports on the Malabar Coast and is popularly called the 'Venice of the East'. To cruise in a 'kettuvallam' or the traditional houseboat is an experience that will linger life long. The unusual geographical setting of the water lying at the same level with the land provides an edge to the tourists while on the backwater ride. You have an opportunity to get a closer and a better look at the village life on shore, palm covered narrow canals, vast fields of paddy and tiny hamlets settled along the sides of the canals. Catch the glimpse of daily activities of the locals, Chinese fishing nets, flocks of ducks around the banks and tiny birds flying across the sky.
Besides the backwaters, Alappuzha is famous for the Snake Boat Races organized every year around the time of the festival of Onam. The giant snake boats are called Chundanvalloms, which compete against each other for the prestigious Nehru Trophy. The trophy is named after the first Prime Minster of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, as he gave away the trophy to the winner of the first boat race.
